Responding To Child Sexual Abuse

Here are some tips on how to respond to Child Sexual Abuse. Please remember that these are just tips. We are not professionals in any way, nor can we substitute for one.

If your child or any child you know, hints in any way that he/she has been sexually abused, please encourage him/her to talk freely to you. Please do not judge the child or make judgmental comments.

Reassure the child that he/he has done the right thing by confiding in you. The child may experience the feelings of guilt and fear for revealing the secret. It is common for abusers to instill fear into the child by threatening to harm the child or those close to the child as a form of punishment for telling.

Make sure that you show the child that you understand and believe what the child is confiding in you. It is important the child gets your support and encouragement.

Reassure the child that the abuse was not their fault in any way. It is common for the child to believe that they were at fault or caused the abuse in order to make sense of what happened. Please make sure the child understands you still love them and telling has not changed your love for them.

Tell the child you will make sure they stay safe and the abuse stops.

We hope that these tips will help you when faced with a situation of an abused child. Thank you and stay safe! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ;o)
