"A qualified therapist has the knowledge, training, and experience to help you deal with your problem. These qualifications can be easily ascertained during the initial interview. You will want to find out whether the person has a license. Then you will want to evaluate the type of training the therapist has had. Expertise and experience are important concerns and are areas where you should ask very specific questions and demand very specific answers. I strongly recommend that you select a therapist who has handled several cases of sexual abuse and who has seen at least one of those cases through to a successful termination. Next, if you know or suspect that you have repressed all or part of your memories of abuse it is essential that you find a therapist who has experience with multiple personality disorder (MPD) and with hypnotherapy. Because you have repressed some memories, this does not mean you have multiple personality disorder. Certain types of repression resemble some of the features of MPD and if your therapist is familiar with the more severe cases of MPD, she/he will certainly have the skills to help with less complex symptoms. If you truly want to obtain therapy, you will find a way. You will look hard enough, ask enough people for help, and a path will open up for you. In the end, obtaining the help of a therapist is not a question of money, it is a matter of commitment. If you are sufficiently committed and want to get help, you will find it." |
