Mathew

as little children we played together
made baby plans to travel the world
I remember how happy that made you
smiles flushed your round face
until it grew dark outside
and you had to go home
I saw the smile slowly fade
and fear exposed itself in your baby brown eyes
and mathew I remember the promise we made
we were going to sell your daddy to the circus
and run far away, just you and me
and mathew I remember your promise
to kill him if he ever touched you again
still small children with high hopes of the world
that has only thrown its cold shoulder
and mathew I remember when we grew up
we grew apart
I remember waving good-bye not aware it was my last
when you decided that this world didn't hold a place for you
you walked beneath the sunset and never came back
and mathew I remember the smile on your face
right away I recognized it
it was the smile of freedom
and mathew I remember you promising to always love me
before you left
I just smiled back not realizing what it meant
and mathew I remember thinking about you
wondering where you are now
and if we will ever meet again
I remember many things
but one question weighs on my mind
mathew, do you still remember me?
